CLASS INFORMATION & DESCRIPTIONS

THERAPEUTICS YOGA (Click onto the workshops page for details)

OPEN CLASSES

INTERMEDIATE YOGA w/ Megan Archer
A traditional Hatha yoga class that places emphasis on cultivating core strength, improving balance, breath control, and flexibility through focus and concentration. Classes will include a graceful blend of yoga postures, breath work, meditation and relaxation. Recommended for experienced yogis.

SLOW FLOW YOGA w/Mary Bartel
A class with sequences of postures to cultivate strength, balance and meditation in motion. Students are guided to be mindful of structural alignment, breath and energy. The class begins with a seated centering including Pranayama (breathing techniques) and warm-up movement to open the body.  The class continues with yoga asana (pose) sequences that may incorporate intermediate level poses and balances and some longer holdings.  Participants should have knowledge and experience of the primary yoga asanas and how to modify them when necessary and should be comfortable moving slowly through sun salutations.  The class ends with a ten minute relaxation and seated meditation.

GENTLE AND RESTORATIVE YOGA FREE for Cancer Patients, Care Givers & Family Members w/Mary Bartel  Offered through an AMC Oncology Dept. Grant awarded by the AMC Foundation  (See Press Release below)
A class to unwind the physical and emotional body.  This class will begin with conscious relaxation and pranayama (yogic breathing techniques) for centering followed by gentle Yoga stretches and poses sometimes joined as a sequence of poses to warm and open the body, followed at times by Yoga pose(s) with the support of well placed blankets, pillows and chairs.  Experience lingering quietly in these propped poses to sooth away stress and tension with some guided meditation or mudra (hand gesture).

In general, restorative poses are for those times when you feel weak, fatigued, or stressed from your daily activities. They are especially beneficial for the times before, during, and after major life events: death of a loved one, change of job or residence, marriage, divorce, major holidays, etc.  In addition, you can practice the poses when ill, or recovering from illness or injury.

STRUCTURAL YOGAw/Mary Bartel

A form of classical yoga that adapts yoga poses to individual needs.  Structural Yoga relies on a deep respect for the body's innate capacity for safe, healthy movement and healing. This translates to a way of teaching that invites the body to find its own optimal way of moving and building strength, without the use of many props or hands-on corrections that might ultimately hinder self-awareness and the slow, careful development of the muscle structures that are needed to develop a full yoga practice. You will hear your teacher cue with anatomical focus of which muscles should be felt as stretching/releasing or contracting/strengthening.  Structural Yoga students are also gently invited to find their own yogic path that can carry them through personal challenges, on a path of spiritual growth and transformation.

YOGA FOR CORE STRENGTH AND STABILITY w/Mary Bartel
A Mindful Full Body Workout
Classes Include:
• Weight training exercises with light dumbbells targeting the chest, back, shoulders, arms while performing yoga poses for lower body strength, conditioning and endurance.  Use of the dumbbells are optional - you can choose to do the movement in the poses or just hold the poses.
• Conscious deep breathing and slow movements
• Balancing
• Pilates & other Core Strength Exercises

Benefits:
• Sharpens Mental Focus & Concentration
• Shapes - Tones Your Body
• Increases Upper Body Strength & Conditioning
• Increases Lower Body Strength & Balance (Stability)
• Improves Flexibility and Range of Motion
• Enhances Proper Breathing Techniques
• Builds Lean Muscle & Bone Density
• Stimulates Metabolism
• Improves Athletic Performance

“Incorporate the Yoga concepts of conscious controlled breathing and movement, focus and concentration and you will surely enhance not only your weight lifting workouts but, any workouts, your athletic performance and your mind/body connection too.”

BEGINNER'S YOGA MOVEMENT w/Donna Calderone
A class that strengthens the body by using your own body weight as resistance while moving into and through traditional yoga poses with repetitive flows and holds.  Mental focus is cultivated with deepening awareness of movement and each pose form.  There is also cardiovascular benefits from working the large muscle groups of the body (which increases heart rate) in concert with deep breathing.

DAOIST YOGA w/Jim Hoit
Yoga is as much a state of being as it is a practice.  In the west we typically view yoga as a tradition of India, however, other cultures had practices of their own to bring us to this sense of union of body, mind and spirit.  In China they were known as Chi Gung, literally "energy cultivation. "These practices were offered to their highest level by the Daoists, followers of the way "Dao."

Daoist Yoga reaches across boarders to offer a melding of practices from classic Indian Yoga such as sun salutations and various warrior postures (often with a new twist, literally!) poses and movements from primordial Chi Gung, Eight Brocades of Silk and Tai Chi to create a practice which flows.  Freedom of movement and joy in the practice is our intent.  We will end by practicing some simple self massage to encourage chi movement as well as some guided meditations/visualizations connecting us with the forces of the cosmos to improve our physical and spiritual health.

Jim gives you the ingredients, you be the cook.  Have fun and experience The Way.

STRETCH FOR FLEXIBILITY w/Leigh Ann Tahash
The class begins with some movements and standing stretches, progressing into deeper levels of stretching.  There is a strong emphasis on breathing throughout the class.  The slow deep breathing allows for release of stress, and for the opening and releasing of deeply held tightness throughout the body.

This Stretch class can be used to create better flexibility, increased range of motion, and as a way to develop and enhance body awareness.  This class can potentially be used as a tool for personal growth, and a way to create deep transformational changes in one's life - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

The Stretch technique is that of Lucy Bowen McCauley, dancer, choreographer, and teacher at the Academy of the Maryland Youth Ballet.  Leigh Ann's contribution to this technique comes from 15 years  of teaching and observation of my students, my own past dance and movement training, plus experiences with Educational Kinesiology, bodywork, and healing energy therapies.

Re:             AMC Offers “Strength for Healing” to Cancer Patients, Families

Contact:         Joe Riccio, Communications Manager, 897-2341

SARANAC LAKE – Confronting a disease as serious as cancer can create added stress at a time when healing demands a great deal of energy and perseverance.

The staff of the Merrill Oncology Department at Adirondack Medical Center recognize the challenges their patients and family face, and are offering a Guided Imagery and Gentle Restorative Yoga program to strengthen both mind and body.

“Strength for Healing” is being offered free to patients, their family members and caregivers, thanks to a generous grant from the Adirondack Medical Center Foundation.

Guided Imagery is based on the concept that a person’s mind and body are connected.  The way people think and visualize themselves has a profound impact on the body, mind, and spirit.  For example, worry leads to stress and as a result undermines the immune system, diminishing one’s ability to relax, sleep soundly and eat properly.  However, through guided imagery an individual whose images are beset by worry can learn to engage in positive calming visualizations to enhance physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Guided and interactive imagery as well as visualization have been shown to affect almost all major bodily systems including respiration, heart rate, blood pressure, cell metabolic rates, gastrointestinal mobility and secretion, sexual function, cortisol levels, blood lipids, and immune responsiveness.

The University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center website states, “A review of 46 studies conducted from 1966-1998 by the American Cancer Society found that guided imagery was effective in managing stress, anxiety, depression, pain and the side effects of chemotherapy. A recent randomized clinical trial involving women with early stage breast cancer found guided imagery was also useful for easing anxiety related to radiation therapy, including fears about the equipment, surgical pain, and recurrence of cancer.”

Gentle and restorative Yoga classes seek to unwind and heal the physical and emotional body.  In these classes, participants will learn and experience relaxation and meditation techniques, breathing exercises, slow moving yogic exercises and stretching and supported restorative yoga postures.

Participants will be able to take what they learn in class into a home practice for continued self-nurturing and healing.  Participants are encouraged to work at their own pace and listen to their bodies.  No prior yoga experience is necessary.

Studies have shown the benefits of yoga for everyone are improved physical fitness, lower levels of stress, and increased feelings of relaxation and well being. For our cancer patients and their caregivers the potential benefits include relief of anxiety and depression, stress reduction, strengthening the immune system, reduced pain and suffering and improved sleep.

Overseeing the program are Mary Bartel, a Certified Structural Yoga Therapist and Professional Level Structural and Kripalu Yoga Instructor, and Diane Bryjak, a counseling psychologist/licensed marriage and family therapist and certified in Guided Imagery.  The program will be offered at Inner Quest Yoga & Wellness Center in Saranac Lake, of which Mary is the owner and director.  Participants can sign up for the program in a group session, one-on-one, or both.

For more information and to register, contact the Merrill Oncology Center at 897-2375.
