CLASS INFORMATION & DESCRIPTIONS
KRIPALU YOGA
Kripalu Yoga will do more than make you flexible and strong. It is a unique
way to integrate body, mind, and spirit through opening to the wisdom of your
body. Kripalu Yoga is a modern school of yoga that reflects a synthesis of
traditional approaches. Kripalu yoga incorporates into one system the physical
and purification practices of Hatha Yoga; the mental disciplines of Raja Yoga;
the prana awakening principles of Kundalini Yoga; the devotion of Bhakti Yoga;
and the emphasis on service of Karma Yoga.
The Kripalu Yoga Methodology
Throughout Kripalu’s three-stage approach, you are guided to move at your own
pace, through yoga postures and breathing techniques, honoring your body’s needs
in each moment. Kripalu Yoga is a compassionate and non-judgmental way to
develop your Self. You leave the class feeling uplifted and centered.
Stage 1
Willful Practice (Body and Breath Awareness)
Stage 1 begins with an experiential approach to understanding the details of
alignment and coordination of breath while moving into and out of postures.
Stage 2
Holding the Posture (Inner Focus & Concentration)
Stage 2 guides you to focus your attention on inner sensations, thoughts and
emotions. You learn to hold postures for longer periods of time while
cultivating compassion and awareness.
Stage 3
Meditation in Motion (Absorption)
Stage 3 is a unique and personal expression of Kripalu Yoga. You practice the
art of moving in response to your body’s wisdom, with postures flowing from one
into the next.
OPEN CLASSES
ALL LEVELS YOGA classes are taught as
Kripalu Stages I & II & sometimes III also utilizing the dynamic principals of
alignment as taught in other Yoga styles.
All levels of experience welcome to attend this class. Students are guided into
poses at a basic level and then may be invited to challenge themselves beyond at
a moderate level. All students are encouraged to work within their level of
experience without judgment. Remember there is NO competition in yoga. This
class is recommended for everyone so that they can learn modifications of poses
presented to them in an intermediate/moderate class. Students will also be introduced to
some basic Slow Flow Vinyasa sequences.
MODERATE YOGA This class is for everyone looking for a relaxing and revitalizing yoga
experience.. Pranayama (breathing exercises) are followed by gentle movements
to warm up the body, blending into an asana (posture) series designed to
engage the entire body. The class ends with a ten minute relaxation followed
by 5 minutes of silent meditation. All levels of experience can equally
enjoy this class as the individuals are encouraged to modify every movement
to their unique needs. Beginners will find the depth of explanation suitable
to follow the flow without difficulty.
SLOW FLOW
YOGA a class with sequences of postures
to cultivate strength, balance and meditation in motion. Students are guided to be mindful of
structural alignment, breath and energy. The class begins with a seated
centering including Pranayama (breathing techniques) and warm-up movement to
open the body. The class continues with yoga asana (pose) sequences that
may incorporate intermediate level poses and balances and some longer holdings.
Participants should have knowledge and experience of the primary yoga asanas and
how to modify them when necessary and should be comfortable moving slowly
through sun salutations. The class ends with a ten minute relaxation and
seated meditation.
GENTLE AND RESTORATIVE YOGA
a class to unwind the physical and emotional body. This class will
begin with conscious relaxation and pranayama (yogic breathing techniques) for
centering followed by gentle Yoga stretches and poses sometimes joined as a
sequence of poses to warm and open the body, followed by
Yoga pose(s) with the support of well placed blankets, pillows and chairs.
Experience lingering quietly in these propped poses to sooth away stress and
tension with some guided meditation or mudra.
In
general, restorative poses are for those times when you feel weak, fatigued, or
stressed from your daily activities. They are especially beneficial for the
times before, during, and after major life events: death of a loved one, change
of job or residence, marriage, divorce, major holidays, etc. In addition,
you can practice the poses when ill, or recovering from illness or injury.

NOTE FOR ALL LEVELS:

everyone is guided to move at their own pace. Work without strain and find the
place where you are sufficiently challenged and where in each stretch and
posture your body and breath flows freely. The Yoga Sutras guide us to
"cultivate a steady comfortable pose". Most importantly be content, let-go, practice with joy and have fun.
YOGA FOR THE CORE w/ Shannon Delaney
A class to motivate and recharge body, mind, and spirit. Join Shannon as she guides participants into
seven unique and
energy filled yoga inspired sessions. Each session will include a total
body asana (pose) practice where we will pay extra attention on
strengthening the body's powerhouse; our core. We will strengthen and
lengthen the major muscle groups of both the upper and lower body using
props and sometimes weights to assist, and at the same time challenge,
our bodies to grow in strength and suppleness. We will always close
each session with a deep relaxation and meditation segment aimed at
generating balance between the yoga practice and our daily lives.
STRETCH FOR FLEXIBILITY w/Leigh Ann Tahash
The class begins with some movements and standing stretches, progressing
into deeper levels of stretching. There is a strong emphasis on
breathing throughout the class. The slow deep breathing allows for
release of stress, and for the opening and releasing of deeply held
tightness throughout the body.
This Stretch class can be used to create better flexibility, increased range
of motion, and as a way to develop and enhance body awareness. This
class can potentially be used as a tool for personal growth, and a way to
create deep transformational changes in one's life - physically, mentally,
emotionally, and spiritually.
The Stretch technique is that of Lucy Bowen
McCauley, dancer, choreographer, and teacher at the Academy of the Maryland
Youth Ballet. Leigh Ann's contribution to this technique comes from 15
years of teaching and observation of my students, my own past dance
and movement training, plus experiences with Educational Kinesiology,
bodywork, and healing energy therapies.
PILATES CORE MAT (available one-on-one) w/Mary Bartel
Pilates is a full body exercise program with an emphasis on strengthening the
“core” muscles which include the lower back, abdominals, thighs, buttocks and
hips. There are also upper body strengthening exercises such as planks and
Pilates push-up to tone the arms, upper chest and back. Pilates lengthens,
strengthens and tones your body as well as increases flexibility and balance.
You will learn to focus and concentrate your mind in conjunction with the
movements. Pilates is a mind/body experience. With continued practice you will
be able to execute the movements with fluidity and precision isolating only the
muscles that need to work. Mary always say, "Grace will arrive - be patient -
and just be!"
Joseph Pilates said, “In ten sessions you will feel the difference, in twenty
you will see the difference, and in thirty sessions you’ll have a whole new
body.”
